Are you looking for a new tool to create jingles, voice tracks, and podcasts? All this without paying a single cent? Then don’t hesitate any longer, Studio One prime version seems to be the ideal solution. Much more powerful than Audacity, but still free and unlimited, Studio One Prime is a very easy-to-use software that will simplify your life. How do you use it? We’ll guide you through your first steps here.
First of all, you should know that the free version we are going to talk about is more than enough to operate on web radio. However, it is a bit tedious to install. You have to go to presonus.com then products, search for studio one, buy, create an account and choose the free and unlimited version, it happens on this page. Don’t worry, you won’t have to pay a cent, even if you have to register and click on “Add to Cart”.
Once you have registered, you will receive a code by email, which allows you to download and install the software.
Launch the software. You will be able to set up your profile (artist’s profile) as well as the audio configuration.
But first, let’s create a new song, that is with an empty interface. It is also on this screen that we choose the name, the place where the file will be saved as well as the settings of the recording (sampling, etc…).
You are now ready to start making your first Voice Track in Studio One. To test the capabilities of this software, we advise you to import a bed.
Then create a track for your voice. You can give it a name and characteristics (and choose the tone!) So you have your voice track and a track with a bed. In this voice track, you will have to give it the recording function by clicking on the round icon (next to the functions S for solo and M for mute).
By clicking or not on the icon to the right of the recording, you can choose to hear yourself in the headphones or not. Now you have prepared the track for recording.
You also have the possibility, by clicking at the bottom left of the track settings, to access additional settings for volume and pan (left or right orientation).
For your test voice track recording, you can “mute” the bed so that you don’t hear it and lower the track volume (-20 for example).
You are now ready to record your first voice track. To do so, just click on the red circle at the bottom almost in the middle of the screen. Now it’s up to you.
Once your voice is recorded, you can press stop (or the space bar). You can then position your voice in the right place in relation to your bed, or even fade out the bed at the end of your voice to make it sound clean. To modify/cut your voice, you can double-click on it. It then appears at the bottom of the screen in a large size, it is very intuitive to work on the feature.
Now let’s talk about voice effects. Click on display, then on console. The console/mixer will appear with one chunk per track, as well as your master, the sum of all your tracks.
So you can treat the sound of each track (your voice and your bed) but also have a final sound effect. The big advantage is that you will be able to save your sound effects preferences, which is very useful when you do voice tracks. You will only have to record your voice, without having to redo the settings. Your voice will always be processed in the same way!
To work on your voice, you can, for example, test Channel Strip, which is in the free configuration with a compressor and an equalizer (just move with the cursor the channel strip block to the track you want to treat). It’s up to you to make the settings you want.
The sound on this track will always have this sound effect. You can apply a sound effect to any track, including the master.
When you have finished, you can export the file by clicking on Song and then Export Mix.
All you have to do is save this session to use it again for your next voice track recording. This will be, for example, your basic preset (bed + sound effects) for all your voice tracks. To save it, just click on file then save a new version.
There you have it, you have enough elements to start using Studio One Prime without too much difficulty. This software is full of options and settings to help you create the best audio content possible. It’s free, so you’d be wrong not to take advantage of it.
